Exams & Cleanings

While routine brushing and flossing at home is necessary to keep your child’s smile looking its best, visiting the dentist for a comprehensive exam and cleaning is essential. The American Dental Association recommends that your child visit the dentist every six months to ensure his or her teeth stay healthy and smile stays beautiful.

Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination is a process in which the doctor gathers information about your child’s teeth, growth, and development to provide a thorough diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan.

Growth and development:  The doctor will evaluate and monitor your child’s growth and development.  This is critical for proper function as well aesthetics.

Exam for Cavities:  During this visual examination, the doctor locates areas of decay and cavities on chewing surfaces and between the teeth.  The doctor uses both a clinical exam and x-ray findings to determine optimum treatment.

Periodontal Examination:  The doctor will examine your child’s gum tissues to insure that gum disease is detected in its early stages.

Professional Cleanings

Our staff has been trained to take it slow and practice gentle dentistry. The hygienist will carefully clean your child’s teeth. By building a rapport with our young patients, they will feel more relaxed. Then, the hygienist will floss your child’s teeth, use a polishing compound, and apply fluoride. Cleanings usually aren’t painful, but if your child has any anxiety about the dental exam, be sure to let the hygienist know. They may offer several sedation options to ensure your child’s comfort. Our hygiene department provides preventive care for your child and home care instructions for parents and patients.  This will enable your child to maintain proper brushing and flossing habits and a healthy mouth for a lifetime.
